Full Mouth Reconstruction: Dental Crowns To Enhance Appearance

full mouth reconstruction Hackensack, NJ

Dental crowns can be used to improve the appearance of one's teeth duringna full mouth reconstruction. Crowns are restorations that cover up the visible part of teeth. They can be used to address a variety of oral problems like:

  • Deformed or stained teeth
  • Short teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Teeth that have been repaired with a root canal
  • As an artificial tooth on a dental implant

How crowns are used during full mouth reconstructions

The primary goal of a full mouth reconstruction is to rebuild and restore the function of any damaged teeth, but the dentist also uses the opportunity to fix outstanding aesthetic issues. Crowns can be matched with the shape, size and color of the patient's real teeth to create a natural look.

A damaged tooth will need to be prepared before it is covered up with a crown. This involves removing portions of the enamel to create a tight fit with the crown. This process is irreversible, so the tooth will always need to be covered up with a restoration to protect it from irritants in the mouth.

Once the tooth is prepared, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth and sends it to a dental lab that makes crowns. It takes about two weeks before the finished crown gets back to the dentist. Temporary crowns are typically used to protect the patient's teeth during this period.

Once the patient's customized crown is ready, the dentist takes off the temporary crown and swaps it with the customized crown. This typically completes the process of getting crowns for a full mouth reconstruction. The patient might experience increased tooth sensitivity after getting a crown, but that should go away in a few days. Patients should avoid sticky and chewy foods for the first few days after getting a crown to prevent it from being dislodged before the dental cement used sets.

The different types of dental crowns

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials like gold, silver, composite resin and metal alloys. Crowns made from all-porcelain or ceramic look the most natural, which can be helpful when the patient wants a full mouth reconstruction for improving their appearance.

  • Porcelain crowns: Porcelain crowns have the same texture and translucence as real teeth. They are great for front teeth due to their aesthetics, making them a popular choice for full mouth reconstruction patients who want to improve their smile. The main flaws of these types of crowns are the fact they tend to damage adjacent teeth and chip over time.
  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns: These have a more natural look than metal crowns and they are more durable than porcelain or all-ceramic crowns. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are great for teeth closer to the back of the mouth that are barely seen when a person smiles.
  • Precious metals: Some people like the appearance of precious metals like gold on their teeth. Gold crowns are the most durable type and they do not damage adjacent teeth.
